Yes. Once a word list is downloaded, new words, reviews and dictionary lookups all run on-device, including in airplane mode. Only list downloads, web translation and iCloud sync need a connection, and none of them block your daily study.
The app is built for Chinese-speaking learners of English, so word definitions are given in Chinese. Parts of the interface use English labels, but if you do not read Chinese this is probably not the right app for you.
It is a one-time purchase of ¥30 on the Chinese App Store — not a subscription, and there are no in-app purchases to unlock word lists. Prices in other storefronts follow Apple's regional tiers; check the App Store page for the current figure.
iPhone and iPad. It is a universal app, so one purchase covers both devices on the same Apple account. There is no Android version and no web version.
The forgetting curve, described by Hermann Ebbinghaus in 1885, shows that newly learned material decays quickly at first and then more slowly. Modian Words uses that shape to place reviews on days 1, 2, 4, 7 and 15 — at the points where a word is about to fade but has not gone yet, which is when review is cheapest and most effective.
Nothing is lost. Overdue reviews stay in the queue and appear the next time you open the app. Spaced repetition tolerates slippage; being a day or two late costs far less than stopping altogether.
For most people 20–40 new words a day is sustainable. Remember that your real daily load is new words plus reviews that come due, and in a steady state reviews run roughly three to four times your daily new-word count. Start low for two weeks, confirm you can clear the reviews, then increase.
CET-4, CET-6, the Chinese postgraduate entrance exam, TOEFL, IELTS, GRE, middle school and Gaokao lists, programmer English and general collections. You can also import your own list. The exact catalogue depends on the app version.
